Umbrella Class Dawnell Muecke

Class Description:
In this class you will be learning how to make a golf size umbrella. There is pre-work for the class that should be completed before you arrive, if you want to finish your umbrella in class. If you don’t have time to do the pre-work or would prefer help at this stage, just bring it in on class day and we can cut it out together! I will also be showing you how to make your umbrella waterproof, as well as how to gather the supplies to make more umbrellas in the future!

Supply List

  • Umbrella pattern (You will get the pattern to cut out your umbrella when you sign up for the class and the umbrella assembly instructions when you get to class)
  • Umbrella frame will be supplied in class
  • Fabric – Good quality quilting cotton fabric works best for this umbrella. (I don’t recommend batik!) The fabric needs to have some give to stretch over the frame. You have several choices on how to combine fabric
  • There are 8 panels in the umbrella – Each panel takes approx. 20” x 30” length
  • You will need a total of 3 ½ yards of fabric to get 8 panels.
  • If you want to make an umbrella out of 1 fabric – you will need 3 ½ yards of 1 fabric
  • If you want to make an umbrella out of 2 fabrics – you will need 60 inches x WOF of each fabric. This will give you 4 panels from fabric #1 and 4 panels from fabric #2
  • Matching thread to machine sew with and hand sew. I don’t recommend shiny embroidery thread, just a good quality cotton or polyester thread.
  • 8 safety pins – Medium size
  • Regular hand sewing needle

General sewing supplies
  • Scissors
  • pins/clips
  • seam ripper
  • sewing machine
  • personal iron/ironing mat (If the shop has irons to share you won’t need to bring this)
  • If you do your pre-work you don’t need to bring the following supplies
  • Rotary cutter
  • Cutting mat (If the shop has a cutting station to share you won’t need to bring this)
  • Ruler 6 x 12 (or any size bigger than this)

Pre-work
  • Cut out the paper pattern (read the cutting directions on the pattern)
  • You will need to cut out 8 fabric panels
  • Lay the pattern on your fabric. Pin and cut (The fabric should still be folded, so you will get 2 panels for every cut) Repeat until you have 8 panels. (Don’t worry if you end up with a small amount of selvedge in your panel)
  • Cut 12 x 2 ½” for a closure strap
  • Cut 5x5 for the top flange
This class is for a confident beginner. We will mainly be sewing on the sewing machine, but there is some hand sewing involved to complete the umbrella.

No cancellation for this class.
