One Block Wonder



The One Block Wonder (OBW) quilt is a stunning design made using just one fabric, repeated six times to create mesmerizing hexagon blocks. This class will guide you through each step to successfully create your own OBW quilt masterpiece.

You’ll learn to design with intention and choose between two unique layout options. No two blocks—or quilts—are ever the same!

PART 1: Getting Started

In this section, we’ll walk through all the foundational elements to get you started:

What You'll Learn:

  • Fabric Selection
    Learn how to choose fabric based on repeat, color, print size, and background.

  • How Much Fabric You’ll Need

    • 12” repeat = Minimum 2 yards → ~54 hexagons

    • 24” repeat = Minimum 4 yards → ~108 hexagons

  • Cutting Your Strips
    Tips for cutting six identical repeats and aligning for precision.

  • Triangle Cutting Techniques
    Learn to use either a blunt-tip or sharp-tip 60° ruler and see how different cuts impact your final hexagons.

  • Sewing Hexagons
    Understand how to use half-hexagons and choose your finishing design path.

PART 2: Designing Your OBW Quilt

Time to bring your quilt to life! Whether you go with Design Option 1 or Option 2, your result will be uniquely yours.

    Learn how to incorporate creative borders—including letting hexagons spill into them!

Supply List

  • 60° Ruler (blunt or sharp tip – your choice)

  • Flat Pins (ideal for securing fabric layers while cutting)

  • Rotary Cutter (fresh blade recommended)

  • 6" x 24" Ruler (for strip cutting – optional but helpful)

  • Cutting Mat (24" x 36" preferred for WOF strips)

Caution: This Technique is Addictive! Once you start, you won’t want to stop!
